The Quest for Thinking Space

Manager Mom put together this office open house multiblogstravaganza group post in which she has asked us to create a post answering the question, "What you consider your office:  the place you get work done, or your best thinking space."  Here it is...

Writing, and even more specifically blogging is my own private little world away from housework, screaming, trees falling, and whatever other unsavory little stressors life presents.  No one in my real world knows any MereCatherine.  The name on your kind blogrolls would call out no significance to my fleshed out fans. For my real life friends and family to read my writing would simply murder my muse in cold blood.  Alone with you is where I do my best work.

But finding workspace, thinking space, or time for a shower is an eternal quest for a mom of sixteen-month-old twins.  Sometimes during nap time, I can snag a few minutes to grab a lemonade, a half sandwich and my computer, root in the exact middle of the couch where the cushions meet, and race against time.  But most of the time I'm capturing little moments here and there.  Picture me in my Tillamook Cheese t-shirt where I made my husband stop on our honeymoon to Oregon and the most comfortable cutoff sweatshorts I can find.  Tic tacking away at the computer perched on the changing table, I glance furtively about to be sure no one has pulled any furniture over or poked out any eyes.

While not the most physically comfortable work space, my grandmother's red velvet settee that now anchors my own living room is probably the most inspirational.  It's on the sunnier side of the house where you can see the street, the neighbors, and the hawks.  The room is comfortably formal, and mostly uncluttered unlike the rest of the house.  As I curl up on that old, worn out period piece, I am curling up in my grandmother's house on a hot summer day, with her air conditioner set at sixty three degrees as always.  I can smell the safety and feel the reassurance that she gave me as a child. With her, I knew I was ok no matter who I was.

I can write anywhere anytime; bars, "Open Houses," the third seat of the car winding up the mountains, many an airplane jumpseat, countless hotels.  But there's nothing quite like having a special place.  When I can be in that special place to write, it's been a good day.  When I can't, I write wherever I am.

First of all, with twins running around, I can't believe your head doesn't explode on a daily basis, much less you being able to get any WRITING done.

I love the story of the settee. It's beautiful to look at, and even more so to know that it's so treasured.

After looking at all these offices, I believe I'm the sole person without a laptop. Maybe I should give them a chance.

I wish I could fit a sofa in my office. It would be so nice for the procrastinating, I mean, working.

And I salute you for working around 16-month-old twins. I'm lucky to get my stuff accomplished and my kids are pre-teens.

Sigh. I apologize to Missy for again pasting her URL instead of my own on my comment.

I love the story of the settee! That is a great picture. I am also super impressed that you can get any writing done with twin toddlers.

Btw - did you ever hear anything from those no-show mommies?

Love the history behind the settee, the pic, and your energy (16-month-old twins? Holy pandemonium)

Plus: you can write semi-laying down! I cannot do that! I don't know if it's an elbow angle thing or what...but I MUST sit in a chair. It's befuddling.

I love the settee and the history behind it. I have some items that were my grandmothers' and know how comforting tangible reminders of those two amazing women are to me. Not that I'd ever forget them, but still...

You blog with twins? Count me with Manager Mom among your impressed readers. Seriously. The settee is lovely. Even more since it is your grandma's. May your A/C remain on 63 degrees this summer. :)

Your settee is beautiful. I've always loved that style of sofa- just never had a place for anything like it. And it's all the more special given that it was your grandmother's - providing a true seat of inspiration!

Have you ever read "A Room of One's Own"? I loved it in college. Lately I've been telling my husband I need a laptop of my own. The desktop is just not mobile enough (duh).

But the headspace, the thinking space, is definitely the most important thing.

Envious of your settee!

I've missed Merecat's comments! Where'd you go? I went off and fell in love with california, slacked on writing and lost touch with all the cool bloggers. I'm so out of it now. So I'm trying to catch up on your world. Come see me sometime.

I can write in the middle of chaos also; there's no choice if you have a large family. But with 16 month old twins? Now that's impressive!
